Why it matters for your family

Rodents leave droppings, urine, and nesting material in attic insulation, right above the rooms where your family lives. Public health agencies warn that hantavirus, a rare but serious disease, spreads when people breathe in particles stirred up from rodent droppings and urine.1

That’s why the CDC advises homeowners not to sweep or vacuum rodent droppings: it puts contaminated particles into the air.1 Removing a contaminated attic safely takes professional equipment and protection.

Pests still active? We schedule removal once the attic is clear of pests, so your new insulation starts clean and stays clean.

Had a roof leak? We replace wet insulation once the roof is dry and sound, so the new insulation stays dry.

How we protect your family while we work

We set up every removal around the people living below the attic. A separate 4-stage HEPA air scrubber keeps pulling the air in the work area through two pre-filters, activated carbon, and a HEPA filter the whole time we work. It’s the same machine behind our standalone air scrubbing service, included at no extra charge.

  • A separate 4-stage HEPA air scrubber runs the whole time we work.
  • Our removal vacuum is HEPA-filtered too.
  • We spray visible droppings with disinfectant before removal.
  • Contaminated insulation goes straight into sealed bags and leaves with us.
  • We wear respirators and protective gear in your attic.
  • We protect the path between your door and the attic hatch.
  • We close off the attic hatch with plastic containment while we work.
  • After removal, we disinfect and deodorize the attic surfaces before new insulation goes in.
  • We ask that children and pets stay out of the work area until we’re done.

Two machines, not one. A HEPA-filtered vacuum removes the insulation. A separate 4-stage HEPA air scrubber cleans the air while we work. Before you hire anyone, ask whether they run both.

Signs your insulation should come out

  • Mouse or rat droppings, nests, or a urine smell in the attic.
  • Insulation that got wet from a roof leak.
  • A strong, stale smell when you open the attic hatch.
  • Tunnels or flattened paths through the insulation.
  • You’ve had pests removed and want a clean start.

How we do it

  1. Inspect and price

We look at the attic and give you one written price for removal and new insulation.

  2. Protect and set up

We cover the path to the attic, treat visible droppings with disinfectant, and start the 4-stage HEPA air scrubber.

  3. Remove

Our HEPA-filtered vacuum pulls the old insulation into sealed bags that leave with us.

  4. Clean and disinfect

Once the old insulation is out, we clean the attic, then disinfect and deodorize the exposed surfaces with an EPA-registered disinfectant, following its label.

  5. Seal gaps

We seal gaps around pipes and wiring before new insulation goes in.

  6. Re-insulate

Fresh insulation goes in at the right depth.

Questions about insulation removal

Can I remove it myself?

We don’t recommend it. The CDC advises against sweeping or vacuuming rodent droppings because it stirs contaminated particles into the air.1 Safe removal takes HEPA filtration, sealed bags, and respirators.

What’s the difference between a HEPA filter and a HEPA air scrubber?

A HEPA filter is the part that traps fine particles. It’s rated to capture at least 99.97% of particles 0.3 microns in size.2 Our 4-stage HEPA air scrubber is a separate machine that keeps pulling the room’s air through four filters, ending with HEPA, while we work.

Is new insulation part of the job?

Yes. We give you one written price for removal and new insulation, so your attic isn’t left bare and you know the full cost up front.

How long does it take?

Usually one to two days, depending on the size of the attic and how much has to come out.
